What is this project about?
The B&O Railroad Museum, in partnership with Baltimore City, has received a grant from the Maryland State Highway Administration’s (MDSHA) Transportation Alternatives Program. This project will focus on replacing and rehabilitating outdated railroad ties and updating traffic calming devices along the museum’s rail lines.
Why is this project necessary?
Many of the existing railroad ties along the museum’s rail lines are outdated and in need of replacement. Upgrading these ties will improve rail safety and preserve the integrity of the historic railway. Additionally, updating traffic calming devices will enhance safety for pedestrians, cyclists, and motorists near the rail lines.
Where will the improvements take place?
The majority of the railroad tie replacements will occur on B&O Railroad Museum property. Traffic calming updates will be implemented along sections of the rail lines that interact with city streets.
What are traffic calming devices, and why are they being updated?
Traffic calming devices include measures like speed humps, pedestrian crossings, and warning signals that help manage vehicle speeds and improve safety near the rail lines. Updating these devices ensures they meet current safety standards and provide better protection for residents and visitors.
Who is funding this project?
This project is funded through a grant from MDSHA’s Transportation Alternatives Program, which supports initiatives that enhance pedestrian, bicyclist, and community safety.
Will there be any disruptions to traffic or rail operations?
While construction is ongoing, there may be temporary impacts to traffic or access near the museum’s rail lines. Any necessary detours or closures will be communicated in advance.
