What is Happening on Greenmount Avenue/York Road?
DOT plans to implement traffic calming measures on Greenmount Ave/York Rd from 43rd St to 25th St with the aim of reducing cases of speeding along the corridor. These measures include travel lane narrowing, dedicated parking lanes, pedestrian crossing upgrades, along with upgrades to the existing bus stops. Narrower lanes create the feel of a tighter roadway and in turn, reduce vehicle speeds.
Phase I of this project has limits from 43rd to 39th St, while Phase II of the project starts at 39th and extends to 25th St.
Why Are We Doing This Project?
We have received concerns from residents within the area about high vehicle speeds and safety, in addition to the need for parking. After looking at the corridor's current configuration, it was decided that lane narrowing and the additional pavement markings were an optimal solution due to their effectiveness and quick installation times. A traffic study of Phase I's limits did reveal that traffic operations will generally face delays once the new designs are implemented, but these delays will not cause the corridor to have a failing level of service. Taking this into consideration along with the safety improvements that would be introduced with these changes, the decision was made to move forward with design development.
Plans for Phase I are currently under review for quality assurance and control, and we anticipate these plans to be finalized in the fall with construction being possible this year pending weather. A traffic study for Phase II's limits will follow before concepts are developed and coordination with MTA is done. Once plans are finalized for Phase II, we hope to implement this phase in Fall 2027.
