About this Project

The Jones Falls Gateway Project seeks to transform a narrow, discontinuous sidewalk along the south side of Falls Road and Lanvale Street — between the CSX Bridge underpass (next to the Streetcar Museum) and Charles Street — into a 10–13' wide shared-use path suitable for people of all ages.

This project will address a gap in the trail network, creating a continuous and accessible Jones Falls as it approaches Penn Station. In addition to the trail improvements, the project team is designing features that will enhance pedestrian comfort and improve stream ecology - including landscaping, shade trees, permeable paving, pedestrian-scale lighting, and sidewalk improvements along the north side of Falls Road and Lanvale Street.

This infrastructure upgrade is part of the broader Falls Gateway Master Plan(External link), which also includes bridge lighting, public art activations, and alleyway improvements being developed by MICA, Midtown, and Friends of the Jones Falls.

Project Location

Falls Road and Lanvale Street - between the CSX Bridge underpass (next to the Baltimore Streetcar Museum) and Charles Street. The project improves the connection between Druid Hill Park and Penn Station with safe, high-quality trail infrastructure.

Project Partners

The Falls Gateway Master Plan(External link) is a collaborative initiative involving Midtown, Rails To Trails Conservancy, Friends of The Jones Falls, Central Baltimore Partnership, MICA, and Penn Station Partners.

Baltimore City DOT has partnered with Midtown to coordinate engagement for the 30% design phase. The project was awarded a 2024 Transportation Alternatives grant by Maryland Department of Transportation, which will fund the 100% design phase.

Project Timeline

  • Conceptual Plan - 2020

    • Midtown received a $25K grant from the Goldseker Foundation to develop the Falls Gateway Master Plan(External link). The Master Plan was developed in partnership with Mahan Rykiel and RK&K to include several improvements to the Falls Rd corridor between the CSX and Penn Station.

  • 30% Design and Community Engagement - Summer/Fall 2025
    • Phase 1: Seek community feedback on the current state of the Jones Falls Trail/Falls Road corridor.

    • Phase 2: Seek feedback on the proposed design of the trail/roadway.

  • 100% Engineering Design - Fall 2025/Spring 2026

    • Baltimore City DOT will work with a consultant to develop the engineering plan for the project.

  • Construction - 2027

    • Construction is expected to begin in 2027, depending on the scope and timing of the finalized designs, funding, and permitting.
