About this Project
The West North Avenue Pedestrian Safety Improvements Project will introduce critical improvements to the pedestrian infrastructure along the West North Avenue corridor. These enhancements represent an important opportunity for targeted enhancements to improve pedestrian mobility, safety, and overall comfort for dozens of adjacent communities. This project follows upon prior efforts to improve the corridor and set out a vision for its rejuvenation, including the federally funded North Avenue Rising Project and the Neighborhood Design Center’s West North Avenue Streetscape Conceptual Master Plan.
About this Project
This project will help corridor-adjacent communities by implementing changes to curbs, sidewalks, lighting, intersections, and other areas that residents and other stakeholders have long advocated for. Among the goals of this work are to:
Create a cohesive and visually pleasing urban environment – Improve visibility with upgraded lighting as needed, expand tree pits for landscaping, and replace degraded and damaged sidewalks, curbs, and other pedestrian elements.
Improve ADA accessibility – Ensure compliance with Americans with Disabilities Act by assessing infrastructure along West North Avenue and then replacing non-compliant curb ramps and sidewalks.
Create safer crossings for all – Enable safer crossings with restriping and reconstruct traffic signals for improved timing and efficiency.
About this Project
The Project will introduce improvements on the north and south sides of West North Avenue between Mt. Royal Avenue (eastern bound) and N. Hilton Street (western bound), an approximately 2.6-mile span.
Project Status
As of summer of 2026, the West North Avenue Pedestrian Safety Improvements Project is in the Planning & Design phase. BCDOT has completed its Existing Conditions Assessment of the corridor, identifying infrastructural deficiencies, project-specific locations for planned improvements, and other details. Between the summer and spring of 2027, BCDOT will:
Develop concept designs for improvements.
Introduce concept designs to communities and surrounding stakeholders during public engagement phase.
Create preliminary design plans with a preferred alternative based on public feedback, which will then progress to 100% design.
Planned Improvements
Transportation infrastructure enhancements will include:
Replacement and/or repairs to damaged and nonstandard curbs, gutters, and sidewalks
Installation of ADA-compliant ramps on sidewalks as needed
Updates to signage and pavement markings
Installation of new pedestrian lighting for improved visibility and safety
New landscaping
Traffic signal upgrades or reconstruction
Planned Improvements
BCDOT has scheduled a hybrid in-person/virtual meeting at the Enoch Pratt Free Library-Walbrook Branch at 6 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 24. Agency planners, engineers, and other support staff will present details about BCDOT’s existing conditions assessment of the project corridor and collect feedback from attendees.
