About this project
The Greenway Trail Druid Hill Park to Lake Montebello project is a 2.8-mile trail that will connect Druid Hill Park and Lake Montebello. This project would add a separated trail along East Drive in Druid Hill Park, Wyman Park Drive, N. Charles Street, and E. 33rd Street.
Greenway Trails Network is a vision for a 70+ mile trail system across Baltimore City that seeks to connect neighborhoods with natural resources and green space and make our city a more livable and resilient place to live. Learn more about the network.
Project Goals
The Greenway Trail Druid Hill Park to Lake Montebello segment was designated a priority corridor in the Baltimore Green Network Plan (2018). This plan established an ambitious vision to improve access to green space and essential destinations.
This project in particular seeks to:
Increase access to parks and green space: This project will connect popular recreational destinations, including Druid Hill Park, Lake Montebello, and Herring Run.
Make it easier for non-drivers to reach key destinations: An estimated 27% of households in and immediately surrounding the project area do not have access to a car. The new trail will make it easier for these community members to reach destinations such as Giant, the Y on 33rd Street, MedStar Union Memorial Hospital, the Enoch Pratt Free Library Branch in Waverly Clifton Park, the Baltimore Museum of Art, the 32nd Street Farmers Market, Montebello Elementary/Middle School, Johns Hopkins University, and Morgan State University.
Improve traffic safety: This project will create a dedicated, protected space for people walking, rolling, and biking between Druid Hill Park and Lake Montebello. This alignment and its surrounding streets have seen dozens of vehicular crashes over the last four year. The City of Baltimore is actively seeking to reduce crashes and make travel conditions safer for drivers and non-drivers alike.
Project Status
As of February 2026, we are in the process of getting a design team on board to advance the designs from from 30% to final design. Advancing the design to 100% will include:
Refining preliminary design plans (30% designs)
Re-engaging adjacent communities with project updates
Completing design plans (100%) so we begin construction
Community Engagement
We will update this section once our design team is on board and we are ready to start advancing the designs to 100%. Please stay tuned!
If you are curious what engagement has been completed to date, please check out the project timeline.
