What is the goal of the Pratt Street Intersection Improvements Project?
The goal of this project is to enhance pedestrian safety, accessibility, and overall mobility along Pratt Street. This initiative focuses on improving pedestrian infrastructure to create a safer, more navigable urban environment.
This project is funded by a federal grant specifically awarded for ADA and safety upgrades. The funds must be used for these improvements or returned.
What specific improvements will be made at these intersections?
Planned improvements include:
High-visibility continental-style crosswalks
ADA-compliant pedestrian ramps
Countdown pedestrian signals (CPS)
Accessible pedestrian signals (APS) for visually impaired pedestrians
Bicycle and pedestrian wayfinding signage
New traffic signal conduits to support upgraded pedestrian signals
Which intersections will receive these improvements?
Improvements will be implemented at these key intersections:
Pratt Street & Light Street
Pratt Street & Calvert Street
Pratt Street & President Street
Will the project alter the existing layout or structure of Pratt Street?
No. The improvements will not alter or change the existing footprint as they are designed to enhance and modify the current structure while maintaining its original scale and layout.
How will this project impact traffic in the downtown area during construction?
Temporary lane closures and adjustments at key intersections will be necessary; however, construction work will be done at night from 9 pm to 5 am to minimize downtown disruptions.
How many lanes will be affected during construction?
The number of affected lanes will vary depending on the construction phase. Advance notice will be provided for major impacts.
When will construction begin, and how long will it last?
Construction is expected to begin in mid-May of 2025 and is scheduled to last approximately 9 months.
How will impacted communities be engaged or notified?
Our engagement liaisons will work with the community to inform residents and businesses in the area. We will host a meeting with impacted stakeholders before construction begins. Our contractor will be tasked with distributing flyers to businesses in the project footprint. We will also give residential properties advanced (72-hour) notice of construction.
The community liaisons for this project are:
Monaye Easley-Smalls, District 11 (Monaye.Easley-Smalls@baltimorecity.gov)
Chaquetta Wallace, District 12 (Chaquetta.Wallace@baltimorecity.gov
