The Mount Royal Avenue Road Diet will provide three significant changes that will create safer conditions for pedestrians, cyclists, and other non-drivers:

  1. It will connect gaps between the Mount Royal Avenue separated bike lane, the Jones Falls Trail shared-use path, and the North Avenue separated bike lane via a low-stress, two-way separated bike lane.
  2. It will taper the roadway from two lanes to one lane between Dolphin Street and North Avenue.
  3. It will introduce minor ADA improvements to improve safety conditions for individuals with disabilities.

The project is broken into two segments: north end and south end. The north end will extend the Jones Falls Trail's shared-use path at Lafayette Avenue and continue until St Paul Street. It will transition back onto the shared-use path located at the intersection of Mount Royal Avenue and St Paul Street.

The south end will connect the Jones Falls Trail shared-use path with St. Paul Street.

This key facility will provide a direct, safe, and comfortable route to many destinations south of Reservoir Hill and north of Mid-Town Belvedere.

At the intersection of Mt.Royal and Lanvale, the inclusion of new parking spaces has obscured the "Stop for pedestrians" sign at the cross walk on the east side/north bound side of the road. It would be good to move the sign to a more visible location. Generally, people don't stop, but sometimes it slows them down. Also, when cars are parked all the way up to the intersection on the north bound lane it's difficult to see around the last car to see approaching vehicles. You almost have to step into the driving lane to check for cars. Perhaps if the last parking spot be eliminated pedestrians and bikers can see approaching cars.     Thanks Bob. This is great feedback. I've forwarded your suggestion to our Traffic team for consideration. While all design decisions are based in standard traffic engineering practice, we'll see what can be done at this specific location. Thank you for highlighting it.
