This project is the complete replacement of the Sisson Street Bridge over a CSX railway.

Construction will include a complete closure of Sisson Street between 24th and 26th Streets. The new structure will be a single-span bridge over the railroad tracks.

The clearance under the bridge will be greater than the existing conditions.

The funding for the project is a combination of monies from CSX Transportation, Maryland SHA, and Baltimore City DOT.

Why is the bridge being replaced?

Recent bridge inspections have revealed severe deterioration of the structure. Due to its condition, the bridge is currently closed to vehicular and pedestrian traffic.

Will the bridge utilize the same footprint?

The new bridge's footprint will mostly match the existing structure. However, due to current design standards, the new footprint is slightly bigger. The vertical profile will also be adjusted to allow for more clearance below the bridge.

How long will the bridge construction take?

The anticipated timeline for bridge construction is approximately 18 months.

The bridge removal was completed this summer. The replacement of the bridge (completing the design phase) is still on hold as a construction agreement is executed between CSXT and the City. A timeline for the construction phase is not available at this time as it is dependent on the finalization of the construction agreement.

  • Share Why is this project taking so long? Why isn't the city or CSX involving the community or updating the neighbors? Why are the updates on this page out of date and misleading (e.g., it says it's at 100% but currently all that is happening is destruction of the existing bridge without any plans to immediately replace it)? Why didn't the city provide / create a temporary bridge for pedestrians and cyclists to at least be able to go over while a new bridge is constructed? Why did the city prioritize convenience to CSX over what would serve City residents by removing the bridge? Are there federal funds that the City obtained that support this project, and, if so, when does the City have to complete spending those and the project? on Facebook Share Why is this project taking so long? The delay in the project is a result of on-going negotiations between the City and CSXT regarding the construction agreement for the structure.

The design of the replacement bridge is essentially complete, aside from updates related to new design and construction standards. The removal of the existing bridge utilized a temporary pause in railroad traffic implemented by CSXT.

The City does not have the authority to erect another structure over CSXT property without their permission. The land adjacent to and above the railroad tracks is the property of CSXT.

The bridge was taken out of service due to safety concerns related to the structural deterioration of the bridge.

Federal funds have been utilized on this project. An extension to complete the project, related to the construction agreement, is being discussed with MDSHA.
