Biking through Baltimore
Every day I bike to work, carefully and with very bright clothing, trying to go through the very few available protected bike lanes when possible. Overall the biking infrastructure in this city is not sufficient. Most of the biking routes are supposed to share the road with cars that are speeding and get dangerously close. Many drivers are watching videos on their phones and distracted, which puts pedestrians and bikers in danger.
I live near Patterson Park and usually take Fawn street to cross S President Street towards the Inner Harbour and come back the same way. This crossing is incredibly dangerous due to the speed at which cars turn from Eastern Avenue into S President Street towards the highway and the speed at which cars come from the highway. I have almost been run over (again, while wearing very bright clothing) 3 times due to cars skipping the red light at very fast speeds and distracted drivers on their phones.
I would like to request red light cameras are installed at this location and bumpers ahead of the crosswalks so that cars have no other choice than to slow down. I have submitted comments to DOT surveys & 311 requests regarding this without any action. It feels like nobody cares.
Someone will die here if we don't do something. 1/3rd of Baltimore residents can't afford a car and choose to walk, bike or take public transportation. We need to stop prioritizing car's convenience in detriment of pedestrians and bikers. Please help.
