About this project

The Big Jump is a 1 mile on-street shared-use path located on Druid Park Lake Drive from Madison Ave to Lakeview Ave, and W 28th St from Lakeview Ave to Sisson St. This shared-use path connects Reservoir Hill and Remington, two historic neighborhoods separated geographically by I-83 and Jones Falls, and serves people walking, using mobility devices (e.g. wheelchairs), and riding bicycles and scooters.

Three Project Phases

The Big Jump has 3 project phases: Construct, Maintain, and Transform. As of Spring 2025, we have completed Phase 1 (Construct) and are in the process of Phase 2 (Maintain).

Phase 1 - Construct the Big Jump | Completed

In June 2018, we constructed the Big Jump with temporary materials including plastic water-filled barriers.

Phase 2 - Maintain the Big Jump | In process

As of Summer 2025, we are in the process of maintaining the Big Jump by replacing the plastic water-filled temporary barriers with semi-permanent barriers.
  • Phase 2.1 - Install semi-permanent barriers (concrete jersey barriers) on west side of Big Jump.
    • Installation occurred July 2025, see photo below.
  • Phase 2.2 - Install semi-permanent barriers (concrete jersey barriers) on east side of Big Jump.
    • Installation occurred October 2025.
  • Phase 2.3 - Improve and beautify the Big Jump with murals and planters.
    • In progress.

Phase 3 - Transform the Big Jump | Upcoming

The Big Jump will be transformed as part of the Restoring Connections to Druid Hill Park project.

Project Goal

Maintain the Big Jump by replacing the plastic water-filled temporary barriers with semi-permanent barriers. Since project installation in June 2018, the Big Jump shared-use path has been separated from motor vehicle traffic by plastic water-filled barriers. Over time, these barriers have broken down—many are cracked and can’t hold water—and they need to be replaced. We are in the process of replacing the Big Jump barriers with a semi-permanent solution. This is a three-part process:

  • Phase 2.1 - Install concrete jersey barriers on west side of Big Jump. On the west side of the Big Jump, from Madison Ave to Mt. Royal Terrace (non-bridge portion), we replaced the plastic water-filled barriers with concrete jersey barriers in July 2025.
  • Phase 2.2. - Install semi-permanent barriers on east side of Big Jump. On the east side of the Big Jump, from Mt. Royal Terrace to Sisson St (bridge portion), we replaced the plastic water-filled barriers with concrete jersey barriers in October 2025.
  • Phase 2.3 - Improve and beautify the Big Jump with murals and planters. Learn more about the process and how to get involved below.


Community Placemaking & Outreach

In Summer and Fall 2025, we replaced the plastic water-filler barriers with concrete jersey barriers and installed several safety enhancements along the Big Jump corridor. In Fall 2025, we attended nine community events and meetings (see the list below) where we talked with community members about how they'd like to see the Big Jump beautified (planters, murals, signage, etc). We had more that 200+ people complete the survey and what we found was that 75% respondents wanted to see planters and 78% wanted to see murals.

Now we are making the mural and planters a reality. Join us in the process!

How to get involved with the mural:

  1. Share your ideas and inspiration to help shape the artwork. Survey closed on August 11 at 12pm. Public artists at Graham Projects used feedback from this survey to develop mural design concepts that celebrate the Big Jump and the surrounding communities.
  2. Vote for your favorite mural design. Community members are invited to vote for their favorite mural design before a final concept is selected. View the mural concept designs. The voting period started August 23 and will close September 13. Vote here!
  3. Paint with us at the Community Paint Day. Community members will be invited to install part of the mural during a community paint day. We anticipate this event will happen in October. Stay tuned for more details!

What about the planters?

We'll be installing close to 50 planters along the Big Jump between Madison Ave and Mt. Royal Terrace in October 2026. Planters will be installed within the striped curb extensions space on intersection corners, and the other planters will be directly bolted to the concrete jersey barriers.

Planters will be installed at six locations along the Big Jump path.


Two kinds of planters will be installed with six plant varieties.
