About this project

The Big Jump is a 1 mile on-street shared-use path located on Druid Park Lake Drive from Madison Ave to Lakeview Ave, and W 28th St from Lakeview Ave to Sisson St. This shared-use path connects Reservoir Hill and Remington, two historic neighborhoods separated geographically by I-83 and Jones Falls, and serves people walking, using mobility devices (e.g. wheelchairs), and riding bicycles and scooters.

Three Project Phases

The Big Jump has 3 project phases: Construct, Maintain, and Transform. As of Spring 2025, we have completed Phase 1 (Construct) and are in the process of Phase 2 (Maintain).

Phase 1 - Construct the Big Jump | Completed

In June 2018, we constructed the Big Jump with temporary materials including plastic water-filled barriers.
Image: People walking, biking, and rolling on the Big Jump in Summer 2018 shortly after the pilot project launch.

Phase 2 - Maintain the Big Jump | In process

As of Summer 2025, we are in the process of maintaining the Big Jump by replacing the plastic water-filled temporary barriers with semi-permanent barriers.

  • Phase 2.1 - Install semi-permanent barriers (concrete jersey barriers) on west side of Big Jump.
    • Installation occurred July 2025, see photo below.
  • Phase 2.2 - Install semi-permanent barriers (concrete jersey barriers) on east side of Big Jump.
    • Installation occurred October 2025.
  • Phase 2.3 - Improve and beautify the Big Jump with enhancements that may include, but are not limited to signage, paint, and/or planters.
    • (Materials and funding to be determined.)

Phase 3 - Transform the Big Jump | Upcoming

The Big Jump will be transformed as part of the Restoring Connections to Druid Hill Park project.

One of three conceptual design options proposed in the Druid Park Lake Drive Complete Streets Feasibility Study (2022)

Project Goal

Maintain the Big Jump by replacing the plastic water-filled temporary barriers with semi-permanent barriers. Since project installation in June 2018, the Big Jump shared-use path has been separated from motor vehicle traffic by plastic water-filled barriers. Over time, these barriers have broken down—many are cracked and can’t hold water—and they need to be replaced. We are in the process of replacing the Big Jump barriers with a semi-permanent solution. This is a three-part process:

  • Phase 2.1 - Install concrete jersey barriers on west side of Big Jump. On the west side of the Big Jump, from Madison Ave to Mt. Royal Terrace (non-bridge portion), we replaced the plastic water-filled barriers with concrete jersey barriers in July 2025.
  • Phase 2.2. - Install semi-permanent barriers on east side of Big Jump. On the east side of the Big Jump, from Mt. Royal Terrace to Sisson St (bridge portion), we replaced the plastic water-filled barriers with concrete jersey barriers in October 2025.
  • Phase 2.3 - Improve and beautify the Big Jump with enhancements that may include, but are not limited to signage, paint, and/or planters. (Materials and funding to be determined.)

Community Outreach

In Summer and Fall 2025, we replaced the plastic water-filler barriers with concrete jersey barriers and installed several safety enhancements along the Big Jump corridor. Our next step is to improve and beautify the Big Jump with enhancements that may include, but are not limited to signage, paint, and/or planters.

Between August 1 and October 26, 2025, we attended nine community events and meetings (see the list below) we shared project information, gathered community feedback via a survey, and fielded project questions.

We are currently analyzing the survey data which will inform which beautification treatments are used on the Big Jump.

Concrete barriers installed on the east side of the Big Jump. + Take our beautification survey!

Concrete barriers installed on the east side of the Big Jump

After an initial delay due to rainy weather on September 25, BCDOT's contractor was hard at work last week (9/29) making improvements to the Big Jump. This included installing:

    • Concrete jersey barriers on the bridge
    • A new crosswalk at Eutaw Place and Druid Park Lake Drive. This will provide a new entrance to Druid Hill Park once DPW's work is complete.
    • New bike and pedestrian pavement symbols, refreshed striping, and flex posts along the project corridor

The contractor will continue work this week (10/6). They will install more flex posts, add green paint to intersections, adjust concrete barriers at Lakeview intersection, improve crosswalk at Linden Ave, amongst other various improvements.

Take our 5-question Big Jump Beautification Survey!

As we wrap up the current phase of Big Jump improvements, we are also in the process of identifying how to make the Big Jump more beautiful. And we want your thoughts! The feedback we receive as part of this engagement will inform which beautification treatments are used on the Big Jump. The survey will close on October 26.

Give us your thoughts - Take the survey!

Concrete jersey barriers selected as for the east side of the Big Jump. Installation to start September 25, 2025.

    September 18, 2025

After careful review and close coordination with our bridge engineering department, the project team has selected concrete jersey barriers as the vertical separation material that will be used for the east side (bridge portion) of the Big Jump. The installation is slated to begin September 25, 2025.

Temporary detours will be in place for east bound traffic on W 28th St while concrete jersey barrier are being installed on the bridge.

The contractor will also make final adjustments to the entire Big Jump corridor including installation of pavement markings (e.g. crosswalks and symbols), flex posts, and other related elements.

Installation is scheduled to be complete in early October.

New concrete barriers for the Big Jump

    July 15, 2025

Since the original project installation in June 2018, the Big Jump shared-use path was separated from motor vehicle traffic by plastic water-filled barriers. Over time, these barriers have broken down—many are cracked and can’t hold water—and they need to be replaced. As of July 2025, we have started the process of replacing the Big Jump barriers with a semi-permanent solution.

The first step of the process was replacing the Big Jump barriers on the west side (Madison Ave to ~Mt. Royal Terrace) with concrete barriers.
