Traffic Calming Concepts along Moravia Road between Belair Road and Harcourt Road.

April 4th Presentation

Purpose of the Meeting

  • Discussing identified issues along the corridor
  • Presenting Traffic Calming Quick-Build plan addressing needs
  • Projects in the Area
  • Community Input on Designs

What is Traffic Calming?

  • Reduce average motorist speed
  • Improve conditions for non-motorist
  • Reducing collision frequency and severity

What is a Quick Build?

  • Low-Cost -> High Impact
  • Quick Installation
  • Includes pavement markings, pavement paint, flex posts, signage changes, etc.

What are the identified issues?

Crashes:

  • 2019 to 2021= 32 crashes
  • A high number of rear-end and sideswipes in the same direction
  • The majority of crashes occur during the day

Pedestrian Facilities:

  • Lack of crosswalks
  • No Buffer

Roadway Geometry:

  • Unmarked Parking Lane
  • Wide Travel Lanes
  • Motorist traveling at high speeds
  • Passing when there is only one lane in each direction.

Existing Conditions

Proposed Improvements

Option 1:

  • Create a buffer along EB Moravia Road
  • Install pavement marking and flex post to identify the parking lane
  • Reduce the travel lane width

Option 2:

  • Create a buffer along EB Moravia Road
  • Install a bike lane along WB Moravia Road with a buffer
  • Reduce the travel lane width
  • Remove on-street parking

Looking Forward

Moravia Rd at Walther Ave:

  • Resurfacing
  • Safety Improvements
  • Signal upgrades
  • Bumpout Curbs

Moravia Rd at Belair Rd:

  • Traffic Study for safety and operation at the signal.
