Sep 18 Update: The Sharp Street Bikeway online public comments analysis is now available!
The Sharp Street Bikeway will extend the Maryland Avenue cycle-track through the Baltimore Convention Center towards Gwynn Falls Trail beginning at West Henrietta St. The completion of this project will provide bike infrastructure for future connections towards the Middle Branch Trail.
Sharp Street Bikeway
· Public Outreach - June Public Meeting - 6pm Wednesday June 7, at Martini Lutheran (see flyer above)
Full Presentation from Jun 7
Project Background & Goals
Proposed southward expansion of bike route along Sharp St
Traffic safety concerns at W Pratt St and W Conway St intersections
Community desire to retain street parking and left turn lane in Otterbein
Federal Reserve Bank concerns with bike lane adjacent to Sharp St as well as truck ingress/egress from W Hill St
Design goals:
Provide safe, all-ages and abilities access for scooters/cyclists from Pratt St to Solo Gibbs Park
Study Area
S Sharp St (between W Pratt St and W Henrietta St)
Existing Lane Configuration
S Sharp St between Pratt St and Conway St (Convention Center segment)
Proposed Lane Configuration - Sharp St / Pratt St intersection - Option 1 (2 stage crossing West Orientation)
Convert the western southbound lane into a separated two-way bike lane Cross Pratt street via two stages (east to west, then north to south and vice versa)
Proposed Lane Configuration - Sharp St / Pratt St - Option 2 (1 stage crossing East Orientation)
Convert the eastern southbound lane into a separated two-way bike lane Cross Pratt Street via one-stage (north to south and vice versa)
Proposed Lane Configuration - Sharp St / Conway St intersection - Option 1 (1-stage crossing West Orientation)
Cyclists approaching the intersection would wait in their corresponding bike box Cyclists traveling south would follow the green track along the north side of the intersection Cyclists traveling north would move directly across the intersection (traffic would have a protected left turn)
Proposed Lane Configuration - Sharp St / Conway St intersection - Option 2 (2-stage crossing East Orientation)
Cyclists approaching the intersection from the North would move over to the right (west) with the pedestrian signal and cross Conway with the pedestrian signal, then merge with southbound traffic as they enter Otterbein Cyclists traveling North from Otterbein would move directly across the intersection (traffic would have a protected left turn)
Looking North from the Sharp St / Conway St intersection Existing Conditions and Proposed Changes (option 1 - West Orientation)
Looking North from the Sharp St / Conway St intersection Existing Conditions and Proposed Changes (option 2 - East Orientation)
Looking South from the Sharp St / Conway St intersection Existing Conditions and Proposed Changes (for both options 1 & 2) *Not shown is an option to keep the lanes as they currently exist (to not remove the dedicated left turn lane)* Looking South from the Sharp St / Conway St intersection The proposed change (for both options 1 & 2) calls for removing the dedicated left turn facing north, and widening the remaining lanes *Not shown is an option to keep the lanes as they currently exist (to not remove the dedicated left turn lane)*
