About this project

The Sharp St Bikeway project seeks to make a multimodal connection on Sharp St between Pratt St and W Henrietta St that will:

  • Improve safety for people biking, scootering, and rolling (e.g. using a wheelchair) by creating an all ages and abilities facility
  • Make it easier for people to bike & roll to parks, schools, jobs, recreation, and more by expanding the connected network of existing separated bicycle facilities and providing new connections to neighborhoods south of Pratt St.
  • Fill a gap in our multimodal network by connecting the Maryland Ave cycletrack—and larger protected bike network—to the Greenway Trails Network.

Project Status

As of August 2026, we are resuming work on the Sharp St Bikeway project and building off the engagement and design work completed in 2023. Over the next eight months, the project team will:

  • Reconnect with and engage community members to solicit their input on how they'd like to see Sharp St improved. See the engagement section below to see how to get involved!
  • Collect and analyze data this includes past engagement data, speed data, crash history, current traffic counts, and parking utilization to understand how the corridor operates today.
  • Create final, construction-ready design plans. Our goal is to construct this project in Summer 2027.

Our design team will be working off of two alternatives based on the work completed in 2023:

  • A contiguous two-way protected bikeway along South Sharp Street from Pratt St to West Henrietta St,
  • A contiguous two-way protected bikeway along South Sharp St from Pratt St to or near Conway St, and a ‘bicycle boulevard’ from or near Conway St to W Henrietta St.
    • What is a bicycle boulevard? A bicycle boulevard is a comfortable bike route through the local street network. It is a street with low traffic volume and low speed. It often features shared-lane markings, as well as speed bumps, curb extensions, and other design elements used to calm traffic.

Community Engagement

We are looking forward to reconnecting and engaging with community members to solicit their input on how they'd like to see Sharp St improved. Feedback gathered during engagement will inform the project design. Here's how you can get involved and share your thoughts:

  • Leave us a comment or question using the comment box at the bottom of the page. We'll summarize these comments at the end of the engagement phase (~end of September) and use the feedback to inform the final design. We'll also update the FAQ section on this page based on questions we receive.
  • Connect with us via your neighborhood association. We'll be reaching out to the neighborhood associations along the corridor (City Center Residents Association, Otterbein Community Association, and Historic Sharp Leadenhall Community) and offering to to attend upcoming existing community events and meetings to share project information, gather community feedback, and answer project questions. See the confirmed list of meetings below. As additional meetings are confirmed, we'll share all event or meeting details on this page. Stay tuned!
    • August 18th, 7pm - Center City Residents Association Meeting. Meeting location - Old St Paul Church on Charles Street.
    • September 24th, 7pm - Otterbein Community Association Meeting. Location TBD.
  • Meet us on Sharp St! We'll be out there and looking to connect with people who walk, bike & roll, drive, or take transit along the corridor. Here is when you can expect to see DOT staff out there:
    • August 12th from 7:30 - 8:30am at Pratt St and Sharp St intersection
    • August 18th from 4:30 - 5:30pm at W Henrietta and Sharp St intersection
    • August 20th from 7:30 - 8:30am at W Henrietta and Sharp St intersection
