What is this project about?
We're launching a two-phase safety study on W. Fayette St between N. Fremont Ave and N. Payson St. This study will help us design both short-term and long-term improvements to make the corridor safer for everyone.
Where is this happening?
The study focuses on W. Fayette St from N. Fremont Ave to N. Payson St in Council District 9.
What will Phase 1 include?
In Phase 1, we’ll focus on quick-build improvements at up to five intersections. We'll present possible concepts to the community, stakeholders, and elected officials. Each intersection could see up to two types of improvement treatments. Examples might include curb extensions, new pavement markings, or upgraded signage.
What about Phase 2?
Phase 2 builds on Phase 1 with long-term, permanent safety upgrades. We'll develop up to three draft concept plans that apply to the full corridor.
These concepts may include:
Two-way conversion
One-way with traffic calming (e.g., lane repurposing for bike or bus lanes)
Pedestrian-focused safety features
What types of improvements are being considered?
Some examples include:
New signage and pavement markings
Bump outs and speed tables
Bus stop enhancements
Signal upgrades
Angled parking
Residential traffic circles
Road diets or chicanes
Streetscape features like street trees, pits, and bollards
Some of these may be used in both short- and long-term plans.
How can I stay involved?
We'll be engaging with community members, elected officials, and stakeholders throughout the project. Subscribe to this page for updates and opportunities to give feedback.

In response to feedback from the community, Baltimore City Department of Transportation is undertaking a two-phase study to enhance safety and accessibility for all road users on W. Fayette Street from N. Fremont Ave. to N. Payson St. (for more on this project, please see the W. Fayette Street Traffic Calming Study project page on Streets of Baltimore). This survey provides the opportunity to share feedback on local road user experience. Thank you for taking the time to provide your feedback.
